Ethical Use of Likeness and Personal Inspiration Statement.

Effective Date: 29 October 2025

Website: https://www.perpendicularmonkey.com/

At Perpendicular Monkey, some of our ideas are deeply personal — inspired by real experiences within our own family life, including raising a child with complex needs. These experiences shape our understanding of accessibility, empathy, and the importance of designing technology that genuinely helps people.

We are, however, firmly committed to protecting the dignity, privacy, and autonomy of every individual, especially those who may not be able to give informed consent for themselves.

Our guiding principles

  1. No identifiable use of likeness

We do not use recognisable images, videos, voices, or other identifiable information belonging to any individual who cannot provide informed consent, including family members, in our public materials, apps, or promotions.

  2. Inspiration, not representation

Where personal experiences influence a project, that influence remains conceptual. Our products and demonstrations may reflect ideas drawn from lived experience, but we never depict real people or real data.

  3. Safeguarding and respect

Every decision about how we refer to or draw upon lived experiences is guided by safeguarding principles, the UK GDPR, and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. We prioritise dignity, respect, and privacy at every stage.

  4. Transparency and accountability

We maintain internal documentation explaining how inspiration was translated into design decisions, ensuring all materials remain non-identifiable and ethically sound. Where we use composite or fictional imagery, this is clearly indicated.

  5. No exploitation for gain

We will never use personal likenesses or stories to promote or monetise a product in a way that could be perceived as exploitative or inconsistent with an individual’s best interests.

In summary

We believe that technology born from lived experience can be powerful — but only when handled with care. By choosing representation through empathy rather than identification, we aim to honour those who inspire our work while protecting their right to privacy and respect.
