Decoy Burgers - Special Needs Parenting Blog

Decoy Burgers is where I share the stories, ideas, and small sparks that shape both life and work at Perpendicular Monkey. Some posts are reflections from home — the chaos, humour, and heart that come with raising a child with complex needs — while others dig into the creative side of app design, accessibility, and technology built from lived experience. You won’t find family photos here; I write about George, but I don’t show him. That choice is explained in this post about protecting his privacy and dignity, and it sits at the core of how I approach every project.

Decoy Burgers?

I’ve often thought that if I ever wrote a book or a blog, I’d call it Decoy Burgers. The name comes from a small but memorable family ritual. To him, everything on the table was his, and trying to explain otherwise would usually end in frustration, shouting, or tears.

My Inspiration

My inspiration for app development comes from my son George, who is 17 and has severe learning difficulties. Witnessing his daily challenges has driven me to create technology that is accessible, supportive, and tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals like him. Through this work, I aim to improve the quality of life for people facing similar obstacles, making learning and communication easier and more engaging.
